TOTAL: 10 minutes
Servings: 6
Course: Drinks

Ingredients

  • 1 bottle dry red wine
  • 1 ½ cups pomegranate juice
  • ½ cup brandy or orange liqueur
  • 2 tablespoons simple syrup or maple syrup, if you prefer
  • 1 medium orange or grapefruit
  • ½ cup pomegranate seeds
  • Ice for serving
  • Optional: club soda or sparkling wine for topping

Instructions

  1. Add the red wine, pomegranate juice, and brandy (or liqueur) to a large pitcher. Stir to combine.
  2. Stir in the simple syrup, starting with 2 tablespoons. Taste and adjust sweetness as needed.
  3. Add the citrus slices and pomegranate seeds to the pitcher. Stir gently.
  4. Cover and refrigerate for at least 2 hours (or up to overnight) so the flavors can develop.
  5. When ready to serve, fill glasses with ice and pour the sangria over the top. Add a few pieces of fruit to each glass.
  6. Optional: Top with a splash of sparkling water or sparkling wine, if desired.

Notes

  • Use a dry red wine you enjoy drinking, no need to splurge, but skip anything labeled "cooking wine."
  • Letting it chill overnight gives the BEST flavor.
  • Add more simple syrup to taste if you like it sweeter.
  • Use whatever citrus looks good, blood oranges, navels, or even clementines all work.
  • For a non-alcoholic version, replace the wine and liqueur with cranberry-pomegranate juice and a splash of orange juice.
