I made this last December for a small get-together and not even kidding, it was GONE before the food hit the table! It’s one of those drinks that just works… The pomegranate seeds make it feel a little fancy, the wine and brandy keep it cozy, and the fresh orange slices?! Total holiday vibes!

If you’ve never made sangria at home before, don’t worry, it’s EASY! You basically stir everything in a pitcher and let it hang out in the fridge. That’s it! This version leans into the winter fruit we’ve got on hand this time of year, and it’s just as perfect for Christmas Eve as it is for a casual Friday night in December.

So if you’re planning anything festive, or even if you’re not, this one’s worth making!

Helpful Tips & Variations

  • Use a wine you’d actually drink. No need to splurge, but SKIP the super cheap stuff… A dry red like Cabernet, Merlot, or Pinot Noir works great here.
  • Chill it long enough. Letting the sangria sit in the fridge for at least 2 hours (4–6 is even better) helps the flavors really come together. If you’re in a rush, a quick 30-minute chill will still work, just serve it nice and cold over ice!
  • Taste and tweak. Add more simple syrup if you like it sweeter, or skip it entirely if your pomegranate juice is already sweetened.
  • Make it ahead. You can mix the whole thing the night before and just stir before serving. Saves time and tastes even BETTER!
  • Add a bubbly finish (optional). Want a little fizz? Top off each glass with a splash of club soda or sparkling wine.
  • Mocktail version? Easy. Swap the wine and liqueur for cranberry-pomegranate juice and a splash of orange juice. Still pretty, still party-worthy!
  • Use whatever citrus you have. Blood orange, navel orange, pink grapefruit, all GREAT options. Just slice it thin and toss it in!

Christmas Holiday Sangria

Ingredients

  • 1 bottle (750 ml) dry red wine — Cabernet, Merlot, or Pinot Noir work great
  • 1 ½ cups (360 ml) pomegranate juice — unsweetened or lightly sweetened
  • ½ cup (120 ml) brandy or orange liqueur — like Cointreau or Grand Marnier
  • 2 tablespoons simple syrup — or maple syrup if you prefer
  • 1 medium orange or grapefruit — thinly sliced
  • ½ cup pomegranate seeds
  • Ice, for serving

How to Make Christmas Holiday Sangria

Christmas Holiday Sangria

1. Start with the wine, juice, and liqueur

Grab a big pitcher and pour in the red wine, pomegranate juice, and brandy (or orange liqueur, whatever you’ve got on hand)! Give it a good stir to get everything mixed.

You don’t need a fancy wine here, but definitely pick something you’d actually DRINK on its own. A dry red works best to balance all the fruit, something like a Cabernet or Merlot is perfect…

2. Sweeten it up (just a little)

Now stir in the simple syrup. Start with two tablespoons, taste it, and add more if you want. If your pomegranate juice is already sweetened, you might not need much at all…

You can also wait and add the sweetener right before serving, totally up to you. It’s flexible!

3. Add the fruit

Slice up one orange or grapefruit (thin slices work BEST) and toss them right into the pitcher. Then add the pomegranate seeds, about half a cup, and give it all a gentle stir.

Blood oranges, navel oranges, or even clementines work great here… Honestly, whatever citrus looks good at the store will do the trick!

4. Let it chill in the fridge

Cover the pitcher and pop it in the fridge for at least 2 hours. If you’ve got time, 4 to 6 hours is even better, or make it the night before and let it hang out overnight.

This STEP is important! Giving the sangria time to sit really lets the fruit infuse into the wine and rounds everything out. It’s worth the wait, promise!

5. Serve over ice and enjoy

When it’s time to serve, fill your glasses with ice and pour the sangria over the top. Make sure to scoop in a few citrus slices and pomegranate seeds, it looks gorgeous and adds even more FLAVOR.

If you like a little fizz, you can top each glass with a splash of club soda or sparkling wine. Not necessary, but definitely fun if you’re in the MOOD for bubbles!

Can I Make This Ahead?

Absolutely, and honestly, it tastes even BETTER that way!

One of the best things about this sangria is that it’s meant to sit and chill… Mixing it a few hours in advance gives the fruit time to infuse into the wine, which makes the flavor smoother and more balanced!

If you’re prepping for a party, you can make the full batch the night before. Just keep it covered in the fridge, give it a quick stir before serving, and you’re GOOD to go!

Now you’ve got the perfect recipe for Christmas Holiday Sangria, fruity, festive, and SO easy to pull together! It’s one of those drinks that looks impressive but takes barely any effort, which is basically the dream when you’re hosting during the holidays.
