This extra flaky, golden Easy Chocolate Puff Pastry Braid comes together with store bought puff pastry, a whole chocolate bar, a simple egg wash, and a dusting of powdered sugar on top. It looks impressive, tastes like a warm bakery treat, and it is SO much easier than it seems!

Think of it like a chocolate filled pastry you would grab at a coffee shop, but you can make it at home with just a handful of ingredients.
And yes… the chocolate gets gooey and melty inside, the puff pastry bakes up crisp and buttery, and the whole thing disappears fast!
Why You’ll Love This Chocolate Puff Pastry Braid

- Easy to customize with different chocolate flavors and toppings

Ingredients You Need
Good news… you only need 4 ingredients to make this look like a fancy bakery pastry!
- Puff pastry: 1 sheet. Thaw it until it bends easily, but still feels cool. If it gets too warm, it turns sticky and is harder to braid.
- Chocolate bar: 1 bar, any kind you love. We used a Milka chocolate bar because we just LOVE the flavor and that super creamy texture once it melts. Milk chocolate is classic, dark chocolate is richer, and hazelnut or caramel bars are also so good here!
- Egg: 1 egg for brushing on top. This is what gives you that shiny, golden finish.
- Powdered sugar: For sprinkling at the end. Optional, but it makes it look pretty and adds a light sweetness.
How to Make an Easy Chocolate Puff Pastry Braid
Preheat the oven to 350°F (180°C). Line a large baking sheet with parchment paper or a silicone baking mat. If you are using frozen puff pastry, thaw it until it unfolds easily, but still feels cool to the touch. If it gets warm, it can turn sticky and be harder to work with…
Unfold the puff pastry onto the prepared baking sheet. Place the chocolate bar right down the center of the pastry. We used a Milka bar because we love the flavor but any chocolate bar works here.
If your chocolate bar feels a little wide for the pastry, you can gently roll the puff pastry out just a bit to give yourself more room.

Using a sharp knife or a pizza cutter, cut strips down both sides of the chocolate bar. Cut at a slight diagonal and try to keep the strips about 1 inch wide. If the strips are too thin, they can tear when you braid, so slightly thicker is usually easier.
Fold the strips over the chocolate, alternating sides to create a simple braid. Press the ends gently to help seal. If the pastry is starting to feel soft at this point, place the whole baking sheet in the refrigerator for 10 minutes. Cold pastry holds its shape better and bakes up taller and flakier.

Beat the egg, then brush it all over the top of the braid. This is what gives you that shiny, golden finish. For extra shine, you can whisk in 1 teaspoon of water, but the egg on its own works great too!

Bake for 10 to 15 minutes, or until the pastry is puffed and deeply golden on top. Start checking around 10 minutes because puff pastry can brown quickly, especially if your oven runs hot. A little chocolate may seep out on the baking sheet, and that is completely normal.
Remove from the oven and let it cool for 5 to 10 minutes before slicing. The chocolate inside is very hot right out of the oven and will ooze more if you cut it immediately. Dust with powdered sugar, slice, and serve warm while the chocolate is still melty inside!

Can I Make This Ahead of Time?
Yes! This recipe is best served warm, but you can absolutely prep it ahead if you want to make things easier.
If you want to get a head start, assemble the braid completely, place it on the baking sheet, and refrigerate it for up to a few hours before baking. Puff pastry bakes up best when it is cold, so this actually helps it hold its shape and puff up nicely.
When you are ready, brush with the egg wash and bake as directed. Then dust with powdered sugar right before serving… it looks prettier and keeps it from melting into the pastry.
How to Store and Reheat
Cover and store leftover chocolate puff pastry braid at room temperature for up to 1 day, or in the refrigerator for up to 4 days. Keep in mind the pastry will soften a bit as it sits, but it is still really good.
To reheat, the oven is best if you want the pastry to crisp back up. Warm slices on a baking sheet at 300°F (150°C) for about 8 to 10 minutes, or until heated through.
You can also microwave a slice for a quick option. Heat in short bursts, about 10 to 15 seconds at a time, just until the chocolate is warm. The pastry will be softer this way, but it still hits the spot.
If you want to freeze it, freeze baked slices in an airtight container for up to 2 months. Thaw overnight in the refrigerator, then reheat in the oven for the best texture.
