This is hands-down the BEST banana chocolate mug cake I’ve ever made and it only takes a few pantry staples, no flour, and about a minute in the microwave! The bananas make it naturally sweet and moist, the cocoa brings all that deep chocolate flavor, and the creamy chocolate topping? Pure magic!

I LOVE how quick and satisfying this one is… No baking, no mess, no fancy ingredients. Just a warm, gooey cake that tastes like a cross between a brownie and a molten chocolate dessert. Perfect for late-night cravings, after-school snacks, or those times you’ve got spotty bananas and zero patience!

Helpful Tips & Variations

  • Use a large mug. Go for a 12–14 oz mug so your cake has room to rise without spilling over. Nobody wants chocolate lava on the microwave tray!
  • Don’t overcook. Microwave times vary, so start with 60 seconds… The top should look set but still soft in the center. If needed, add 5–10 more seconds. (Overcooking = dry and rubbery.)
  • Make it extra gooey. Want those melty chocolate bits inside? Drop a few chocolate chips into the center of the batter before microwaving.
  • Go dairy-free. Just swap the milk in the topping for oat, almond, or whatever plant-based milk you have on hand. Easy win!
  • Add nut butter. A spoonful of peanut butter or almond butter in the batter makes it richer and adds healthy fats.
  • Top it off. Fresh raspberries, banana slices, or chopped nuts on top turn this into a real treat-yourself moment.
  • Want more sweetness? The bananas do a great job on their own, but you can always stir in a teaspoon of maple syrup or honey if you’ve got a bigger sweet tooth.

Ingredients Needed

Flourless Banana Chocolate Mug Cake

You only need a handful of ingredients to make this flourless banana chocolate mug cake, nothing fancy, just pantry basics and a microwave.

(Scroll down to the full recipe card for the exact amounts.)

  • Bananas – Go for the really ripe ones with brown spots. The sweeter and softer they are, the better the cake turns out.
  • Eggs – Just two! They give the cake structure and keep it fluffy and moist without needing any flour.
  • Cocoa powder – Make sure it’s unsweetened cocoa powder, not hot chocolate mix. That’s what gives this cake its rich, chocolatey flavor.
  • Chocolate – I like using a few squares of dark or milk chocolate for the topping. It melts into the warm cake and makes it taste like a real treat.
  • Milk – Just a little splash to help the chocolate melt into a smooth, creamy topping. Any kind of milk will do, dairy or plant-based!

How to Make Flourless Banana Chocolate Mug Cake

1. Mash the bananas.

Peel the bananas and place them in a medium mixing bowl. Use a fork to MASH them really well until they turn into a thick purée. A few small lumps are okay! The riper the bananas, the sweeter and smoother the cake will be.

2. Add the eggs.

Crack in the eggs and whisk them into the banana mixture until smooth and fully combined. The texture should be light and a little foamy, this helps the cake rise properly without any flour.

3. Stir in the cocoa powder.

Add the cocoa powder and stir until the batter is evenly mixed. It’ll look thick, smooth, and super chocolatey. Scrape down the sides of the bowl so nothing’s left behind!

4. Prepare your mugs.

GRAB two large microwave-safe mugs (12 to 14 oz is best). Lightly grease the inside with a bit of oil or butter if you want easy cleanup. Pour the batter evenly into each mug, they should be no more than halfway full to give the cake room to rise.

5. Microwave one mug at a time.

Microwave the first mug on high for 1 minute. Check the top, it should look mostly set but still soft in the center… If needed, microwave for another 10–15 seconds. The cake will firm up as it cools. Repeat with the second mug.

All microwaves are different, so don’t walk away! If your microwave runs hot, start with 50–55 seconds and go from there. It’s better slightly under than over, no one wants rubbery CAKE!

6. Make the chocolate topping.

In a small bowl, add your chocolate squares and milk. Microwave in 20-second bursts, stirring in between, until fully melted and smooth. Don’t skip the stirring, chocolate can burn if left too long…

7. Add the topping.

Spoon the warm chocolate over each mug cake while they’re still hot. It’ll melt into the top and make it extra fudgy and rich. Serve immediately, straight from the mug!

Storage Tips

  • Best enjoyed warm, straight from the mug. This cake is at its fudgiest and most delicious right after cooking. That warm center with the melty chocolate topping? YES PLEASE!
  • Want to save one for later? Let it cool completely, then cover the mug with plastic wrap or transfer the cake to an airtight container. Pop it in the fridge and eat within 1–2 days. Just microwave it for 15–20 seconds to warm it back up.
  • Microwave gently to reheat. Don’t blast it too long or it’ll dry out. A quick zap is all you need to bring it back to soft and chocolatey.
  • Skip the freezer. This one’s just BETTER fresh! The texture doesn’t hold up great after freezing, and honestly, it’s so easy to make again when the craving hits!
